An Auburn, Washington woman is accused of severely injuring a baby boy and causing a brain injury when she became frustrated and roughly placed him on the ground. Dottie Reed, 18-years old, reported to the police that she became angry and upset at the young boy she was babysitting because he was always fussy and did not appear to like her. This incident occurred on May 28, 2010.

Reed told police officers that she grabbed the roughly placed him on the ground. This forced his head to snap back because it was not properly supported. She then lay the child down which caused his head to come forward. This back and forth movement of the neck is commonly referred to as a whiplash motion and is responsible for many injuries in adults. In a baby’s thin and weak neck, such movement can cause brain injuries and death.

Reed called 911 in the morning when she heard the boy cry, go back to sleep, and then start breathing loudly. Paramedics took the infant boy to Children’s Hospital where he was found to have suffered a severe brain injury that was perhaps life threatening. Police have charged Reed with first degree assault.

Anyone who is around babies for any appreciable length of time understand that supporting the neck and head is crucial because the neck has not developed enough to support the weight of the head. If the head is not supported, then a severe brain injury can happen when the spinal cord becomes compromised. We hope for the best for the injured infant and hope that he is able to completely recover without any long term side effects.

Linden Feldman, a 44- year old software engineer, took his kids to Scout-O-Rama sponsored by Santa Clara Council at Kelly Park on May 9, 2009. The Boy Scouts provided a zipline ride with a safety harness to grip the riders as they jump over 25-foot high tower and then zipped down a wire at the speed of nearly 40 mph. As a result of using the zipline tower, Feldman became injured and has recently filed a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts in Santa Clara County Superior Court.

According to the lawsuit, Feldman alleges that the safety harness was a thin nylon piece that could only support kids and not adults like Feldman. Feldman states that he was not told he and other adults could not use the zipline due to weight restrictions. When Feldman attempted to use the zipline, the line broke and he ended up jumping from the tower and slammed to the ground 25 feet below. He was in coma for a week with a traumatic brain injury, respiratory failure and a collapsed lung. Feldman has filed a law suit against the Boy Scouts as their safety preparations were insufficient to allow people like Feldman to use the zipline.

We hope that Feldman recovers from his injuries. Traumatic brain injuries can have very long-lasting and devastating effects. We hope that the lawsuit brings out the facts and that Feldman receives the compensation he deserves.

Washington State researchers have found that severe depression within the first year of a suffering a traumatic brain injury is common. Studies indicate that the incidence of major depression among 559 people with traumatic brain injury was nearly eight times greater than would be expected in the general population.

Major depression during the first year of a traumatic brain injury led to a poorer quality of life and ability to carry out normal function. An estimated three million Americans are currently living with a traumatic brain injury. The most common cause is automobile accidents.

Usually brain injury treatments are focused on the injury and its effect on a person’s ability to think clearly. However, the consequent severe depression can cause negative effects on the recovery. Of the 1,080 brain injury patients admitted to one trauma center in Seattle between June 2001 and March 2005, 559 agreed to participate in the study and were followed for 12 months. Study participants were mostly men injured in automobile accidents. In the first year of brain injury, it was found that more than half of the participants (about 53 percent) were diagnosed with major depression.

Over 1,100 brain injury patients across California are set to benefit from recent developments in hormone therapy. To be implemented in 17 hospitals initially, the treatment involves the use of the sex hormone, Progesterone.

In a hope to limit the cell death which comes after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), an IV drip containing Progesterone will be administered because it is believed that the hormone has some cell protective properties, thereby not letting the brain cells die after a trauma. The practical application of the treatment may prove to be troublesome as informed consent is an issue.

We hope that this hormone treatment proves to be an effective cure of minimizing the degenerative effect caused by brain injury, and those who suffer from TBI due to fatal accidents and falls find some relief.

A 24-year old woman suffered a serious brain injury in a San Diego bicycle accident that took place on April 17, 2010 around 11:50 a.m. The bike accident occurred on Genesee Avenue at La Jolla Village Drive near Westfield University Towne Center.

The victim was riding her cycle when she was hit by a 2004 Infiniti sedan. She was northbound on Genesee when the westbound driver slammed into her causing severe head trauma. The victim was taken to the hospital. Her injuries are said to be non life threatening.

Our office wishes a quick recovery to the injured woman. We hope and pray that she heals completely and comes out of this accident totally recuperated. Cyclists must make it a point to wear helmets. That is the least amount of safety measure a cyclist can take. Keep in mind that anyone who suffers a severe head injury risks the chance of brain injury which includes long term symptoms that can affect the victim for the rest of their life.

A 42-year old man alleges in a lawsuit against TASER International that he was permanently disabled after he suffered a cardiac arrest and subsequent severe brain lesions, when shot by a TASER stun gun. The lawsuit filed against TASER International by the victim Steven Butler is set to go to trial in August 2010.

Butler was shot at by the police using the TASER stun gun, also known as the Electronic Control Device (ECD), when he refused to leave the Santa Cruz Metro Bus station even after persistent efforts from the authorities. Butler’s lawyer claims that the electric shock led to the cardiac arrest which subsequently led to the brain injuries leaving his client permanently disabled.

Brain injury can lead to fatal injuries. TASER guns have been linked to a number of deaths worldwide, typically when used by law enforcement officers in “non-lethal” efforts to control people. It is often alleged that officers misuse the weapons and expose people to prolonged electronic shocks which can lead to brain injury.

An elderly man sustained major head injuries in a Northern California hang gliding accident that took place at Mountain View Elementary School at 1705 Thornwood Drive, Concord, CA. The accident happened on March 28, 2010 around 3:20 p.m.

The injured pilot was hang gliding and was probably looking for a place to land when he suddenly crashed down 30 feet to the ground and hit the walkway of the school. The crash caused him to suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and he was taken to John Muir Medical Center. The man, who has not yet been identified, was believed to have taken off from Mount Diablo.

Our office wishes the pilot a quick recovery. We also hope that the investigation gets finished soon. Brain injury is a very serious issue and anyone who indulges in sports like hang gliding should wear a safety helmet and take any precaution to eliminate or minimize major head trauma. It is also a good idea to always partake in adventure sports with a buddy so that if one of you becomes injured, the other can most likely help their injured partner.

Rapp was riding his bicycle at the intersection of Lewis Road and Old Lewis Road when he got struck by a car. California Highway Patrol offers believe that the accident happened when a vehicle crashed into the side of Rapp’s bicycle while it was making a “left-hand turn” into oncoming traffic. Rapp was taken to St. John’s Medical Center where he was kept in the ICU and received treatment for severe contusions and lacerations on his head and neck along with numerous broken bones. He also lost around three liters of blood.

Our office wishes Rapp a quick recovery. We hope he gets well real soon and is at his athletic best. It is rather sad that the guilty driver did not even bother to stop and help him out! Car drivers need to be very careful while driving and ensure that they share the road with other drivers and riders. It is because of this basic lack of understanding that accidents take place and people get hurt. In addition, drivers need to pay attention to pedestrians and bicyclists while driving—not just other motor vehicles.

Former Nebraska Cornhusker football player Justin Tomerlin lost his life in a tragic San Diego brain injury accident, which happened while he was skateboarding, on March 27, 2010, in La Jolla.

The 27-year old ex-Husker tight end was skateboarding down a hill when he fell and hit his head. Tomerlin was not wearing any safety equipment, like a helmet, which might have had prevented such a tragic outcome.

Our office offers our deepest condolences and prayers to Tomerlin’s friends and family and to the Cornhusker family for their loss. We can understand that his loved ones must be going through a very tough period. But we feel we have to use this accident as an example to stress that wearing helmets while participating in sports like skateboarding can save one’s life. Even a simple bump in the head can prove to be fatal.

A 16-year-old high school baseball player was critically injured when he suffered a traumatic brain injury on March 11, 2010. The teenage player, from Marian Catholic High School in San Francisco, CA, was hit in the head while playing a practice match against Concord, CA’s De La Salle High School.

The injured teenager, Gunnar Sandberg, was struck very hard on his head by a baseball. Reportedly, the batter used a metal bat (which is typical for organized high school and youth baseball leagues) that sent the line drive towards Sandberg where it struck him in his head. He was rushed to Marin General Hospital in a critical condition, which has not improved till now. He was placed in a medically induced coma.

Our office wishes a quick recovery for Sandberg. We offer our prayers to the family in such difficult circumstances. We can understand how disheartening it must be for them. There is nothing worse than watching your child suffer. We hope for his quick and full recovery.

The use of aluminum bats in youth, high school, and baseball leagues has been examined a number of times. Aluminum bats are cheaper than wood bats which can break and splinter over time. In addition, they are lighter and provide more power to the batter as the ball rockets off the aluminum surface which does not give like a wood bat. These powerful line drives are particularly dangerous to pitchers, first basemen, and third basemen who stand closer to the batter than any other player on the baseball field. Line drives come hard and fast and infielders can sometimes not react in time to defend themselves.

There have been a number of serious brain injuries and even deaths as a result of line drive baseballs from aluminum bats. However, in 2002, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated in a report that there is insufficient evidence to conclude that aluminum bats pose an “unreasonable risk of injury.” This conclusion was reached in response to a demand by several consumer safety advocates to change the characteristics of aluminum bats so that they performed like wood bats.
